Specialty Power Plants
Agricultural wastes such as grape vines, almond tree trimmings and rice hulls are burned in a clean manner to generate electricity. Water is essential for these facilities. Wastewater discharge is not permitted. WCA pioneered the technology of building and operating power plants that achieve "Zero Liquid Waste Discharge". California (Delano, Woodland and Burney); New England (Gorbell, Whitefield and Hemphill) |
Computer control and automation of the water, chemistry and environmental functions of the power station enable efficient operation, reduced manpower, lower costs and "Zero Liquid Waste Discharge". |
A power station requires many unit operations for water treatment. Reverse Osmosis equipment is one of those that purifies salt laden well water to a high purity level satisfactory for steam generation and turbine operation. Reverse osmosis achieves this result without the use of chemicals and with a minimum of waste generation. |
Waters, such as in the cooling towers, must be continually treated and reused in a power plant to minimize consumption of water from the environment and to avoid wastewater discharge. WCA developed custom designs for this purpose. |
As waters are purified and reused in power plants, sludge impurities that result must be dewatered and converted to solid form for disposal in an environmentally suitable manner. |
